Indonesia-Japan Held the 6th Strategic Dialogue in Jakarta

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Republic of Indonesia report on June 25th :Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono held the 6th Strategic Dialogue Indonesia - Japan meeting in Jakarta, (25/6/2018). This visit was the first visit of Foreign Minister Taro Kono to Indonesia. In addition to elements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries also participated as delegation of the Republic of Indonesia.

The meeting was held to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Japan diplomatic relations. The meeting aims to enhance bilateral cooperation, among others in the fields of politics and security, economics, trade and investment, people to people contact, and exploration of opportunities for strategic cooperation between the two countries.

In addition to bilateral issues, the two Foreign Ministers discussed regional and global issues of concern to both countries.

The two Foreign Ministers have identified strategic cooperation realized through the development of bilateral cooperation. Japan is a strategic partner for Indonesia and both Ministers agreed on the importance of increasing cooperation in the field of investment, particularly in infrastructure.

The two Foreign Ministers also agreed to explore the possibility of making Indonesia a production base for Japanese manufacturing products aimed at the third markets, including markets in ASEAN countries. In addition, it was also agreed on the importance of encouraging the completion of the mutually beneficial two-country General Review Indonesia Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (GR-IJEPA) as part of a monumental gesture for the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Japan diplomatic relations.

Related to climate change, the two Foreign Ministers welcomed the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) cooperation that so far has been established, and agreed that the implementation of the cooperation should be able to add value and improve Indonesia's capacity in handling climate change impacts.

The two Foreign Ministers also agreed on the importance of encouraging South-South and Triangular cooperation to strengthen economic development support in Palestine and other African countries.

During the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers positively welcomed the developments on the Korean Peninsula, which are expected be able to bring peace and stability to the region. Related to the South China Sea, both Ministers also expressed concern over the occurrence of militarization in the South China Sea region. It is expected that negotiations related to code of conduct (COC) can be completed in the near future.

The two Foreign Ministers also agreed to synergize the Indonesian-initiated Indo-Pacific concept with the concept of Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy from Japan, through strengthening bilateral cooperation and strengthening cooperation through regional mechanisms, such as ASEAN and EAS in the Pacific Ocean region, and IORA in Indian Ocean circle area.

On the occasion, the two Foreign Ministers had witnessed the signing of the Exchange of Notes (EN) on Integrated Marine and Fisheries Centers and Fish Market to increase cooperation in the development of fisheries centers in six outer islands of Indonesia in Biak, Moa, Morotai, Natuna, Sabang and Saumlaki.

Japan is as the second largest investor in Indonesia with an investment value of US $ 5 billion in 2017. In terms of trade value, trade between the two countries in 2017 increased by 13.54% from 2016 reaching US $33.03 billion.
