According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Republic of Indonesia report on July 18th :The final draft of Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) has been agreed upon by UN member states on the last negotiation day of the sixth round of GCM drafting. This sixth-round GCM negotiation has been taking place from July 9 to 13, 2018. This deal was a historic event since the GCM draft was the first document on the governance of international migration agreed on at the global level.

The GCM was compiled through a series of consultation processes, input gathering, and intergovernmental negotiations that last for approximately 18 months beginning in February 2017. This GCM draft contains 23 Objectives that guide countries in developing policies and actions to improve the quality of the governance of international migration, to realize migration that benefits migrants and their families, sending countries, and receiving countries.

Indonesia has always actively contributed to provide inputs to the GCM draft from the beginning of the drafting process. This active participation of the Indonesian government is aimed to exploit the momentum of GCM preparation to strengthen the protection of migrants, especially for Indonesian migrant workers.

Protection for migrant workers is a national urgency and should be prioritized on the agenda of discussion at the UN,said Dian Triansah Djani, Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York when delivering a statement representing Indonesia at the closing session of GCM draft negotiations at the UN headquarters in New York.

Furthermore, Indonesia also called for the GCM draft to be an open living document for further improvement in line with the outcomes of the International Migration Review Forum meetings to be held every four years.

The Government of Indonesia is committed to continuously voicing the strengthening of protection of migrant workers in discussing migration issues at UN forums and attempting to maximize the potential of international migration to benefit migrant welfare and support the achievement of sustainable development.
